How many fields a 4-team round robin needs, and how long it takes

Played on one day, 6 games, at most 2 games on at once because each game uses two of the 4 teams. Every team plays 3 games, so no schedule is shorter than 3 time slots, and 2 fields reach it. As a weekly league it is 3 weeks, one round a week.

One time slot is one game on one field. Durations are slots × game length plus 10 minutes between slots. Teams can be asked to play in consecutive slots, so add rest time if your sport needs it.

How it works

Rounds, byes and match days for 4 teams

The generator uses the circle method: one team stays fixed while the others rotate one seat per round, so no pairing repeats and every team plays every round. Home and away are balanced round by round, and in a double round robin the return leg mirrors the first with venues swapped, shifted by one round so no team gets three home games in a row across the halfway line.

4 teams is the size where a single round robin is over in 3 rounds, which is why small leagues play it twice or three times. A double round robin gives 12 games and a fair home-and-away record; three rounds gives every team 9 games in a season.

6 in a single round robin: 4 teams times 3 opponents, divided by two because each game counts for both teams. Home and away doubles it to 12.
How many rounds does a 4-team round robin have?
3 for a single round robin (every team plays every round); 6 for a double.
Is the home-and-away split fair in a 4-team round robin?
Yes, within one game: the circle method alternates the fixed team's side each round and flips the rotating pairs by position, so every team ends a single round robin with 1 or 2 home games. A double round robin makes it exactly equal.
Does a 4-team schedule need byes?
No. 4 is even, so every round pairs all 4 teams into 2 games and nobody rests. Byes only appear when a team withdraws mid-season, and then the fixture becomes a walkover in the live table.
How many fields do I need for a 4-team round robin on one day?
At most 2 games can be on at once, because each uses two of the 4 teams. So 2 fields give the shortest day: 3 time slots, the fewest possible since every team plays 3 games. One field plays all 6 games back to back; two fields 3 slots.
How long does a 4-team round robin take?
As a one-day event with 30-minute games and 10 minutes between them: 3 h 50 min on one field and 1 h 50 min on two. As a weekly league it is 3 weeks, one round a week, or 6 weeks home and away.
