How it works

Seeding, byes and rounds for 8 teams

Seeding decides who can meet whom: with fold seeding the 1 seed plays the lowest seed in round one and cannot meet the 2 seed before the final. If you draw at random instead, the strongest two teams can knock each other out in the first round, which is fine for a club fun day and wrong for a competition that wants its best final. The generator seeds by list order and can shuffle on request.

Because 8 is a power of two, every team plays in round one and the champion plays exactly 3 games. It is the cleanest bracket there is; the only decision left is whether to add a third-place tie.

At 8 teams the bracket is a full weekend or an evening with two courts. Publish the seeded draw in advance: teams accept a hard first-round tie when they can see the seeding rule, and argue when they cannot.
